BREAKING the STIGMA

An article that I was reading online reported that millions of Americans go untreated because of the misconceptions and shame  around a person’s mental health. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness,  Stigma  is when someone, or even you yourself, views a person in a negative way just because they have a mental health condition. Some people describe stigma as a feeling of shame or judgment from someone else. Stigma can even come from an internal place, confusing  feeling  bad with  being  bad. We must learn to embrace the fact that,  “It’s OK not to be OK! On behalf of Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m sharing an eye-opening short video on  Breaking the Stigma  this week.  https://youtu.be/4dEcMsz6Bas

Our INNER & OUTER selves

(On behalf of Mental Health Awareness Month) One of the most compelling   elements that make up who we are, is a part of ourselves that’s not   often visible to others. It’s the part that we’ll personally struggle with in silence. It’s the part of us that we’re sometimes ashamed for others to learn about. It’s also the part of us that we can’t always explain or even understand ourselves. Even though we’re unable to see a person’s inner thoughts, if they’re experiencing conflict within, it begins to manifest itself through their outward behaviors. I read the article below that talks about the tension between our inner and outer selves which I found interesting and wanted to share. It also provides suggestions on how to balance the two selves. Mental Health Support

During the month of May, I’ll be focusing on Mental Health Awareness. Lately, we’ve been hearing a lot about this subject  and it’s about time!!  For so long I’ve felt like this conversation has been marginalized and hidden for some reason. However, taking care of our mental health  is as important  as caring for any other aspect of our health including our physical, spiritual, and emotional health. This conversation should no longer be a subject of discomfort. It needs to remain in the forefront of our minds because people experience mental health concerns every day and in many ways, and we need to be aware of and learn how to address them. I’ve discovered that recovery is possible and many people can overcome the mental health challenges they face. I want to encourage people to not struggle alone, but to reach out for the help they need. I understand that it’s not always comfortable having to deal with certain issues that may arise in our lives. Heck, we might not even know  how  to
